West Palm Beach, Fla. was the site of the first flight of Sikorsky’s S-76D helicopter. The intermediate, twin-engine helicopter is the latest in the popular, long-running S-76 line, which saw deliveries of the A model in 1979. The 30-minute flight, carried out by Chief Test Pilot Greg Barnes and Pilot Mike Hardy, included the prototype’s successful execution of several maneuvers, including taxiing, hovering and forward flight up to 40 knots.
