Connecticut’s representatives in the U.S. Congress have sent a letter to the Pentagon asking for a report that analyzes the “potential advantages” of reopening the contract originally award to AgustaWestland and Lockheed to build the VH-71 presidential helicopter. The contract, awarded in 2005, is now late and well over budget, thus triggering a mandatory review of the program by the Department of Defense. The inquiry has been seen as a thinly veiled attempt to clear the way for the legislators’ Conn.-based constituent Sikorsky Aircraft to win a new contract with its S-92 helicopter.
