The Phoenix, Ariz. stations, channels 5, 3 and 12, will use one helicopter to capture breaking news and traffic and then use that helicopter as a pool for all the stations to pull their content. This was decided due to current economic conditions, but specific financial terms for the deal were not released. The decision follows similar choices made by other large cities such as Chicago and Denver. In the Phoenix deal, each station will pay for a third of the operational costs for breaking news stories only. The helicopter will be operated by Helicopters Inc. out of the Scottsdale airport and the current helicopter reporters and pilots will need to apply for the two reporter and two pilot positions now available.
