Last week, Dept. of Defense officials confirmed that the wreckage of a Bell UH-1 Huey that had gone missing 43 years ago has recently been found. The aircraft and its crew of four, who were assigned to A Company of the 229th Air Assault Battalion, were last seen on Dec. 28, 1965 lifting off from their base at An Khe in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam. They were heading off on a one-ship mission. Pilots CWO Jesse Phelps and CWO Kenneth Stancel, crew chief Don Grella and door gunner Jim Rice were never heard from again. Their Huey, bearing tail number 63-08808 was, however, recently located in-country with the presumed remains of its crew. Families were notified of the find, but cautioned that positive identification of the remains has not yet been accomplished. For more details
