ADS, parent company of Eurocopter, brought a mockup of a “blue” environmentally friendly helicopter to last week’s Paris Air Show. The aft cabin displayed an engine concept that, once adapted for rotorcraft use, could produce fewer CO2 emissions when compared to today’s turbine aircraft engines. Generally, the system includes an oxidizing catalytic converter, particulate filter and a selective catalytic converter incorporated into a high-compression ratio engine. Oliver Jouis, Eurocopter’s head of environmental affairs, said the blue helicopter is still a few years off, but that the basic technology needed to produce a cleaner-burning helicopter engine has already been proven in the automotive world.  For additional information
