Chief Darryl Oliveria of the Hawaii County Fire Department has announced that his agency will be buying a new light helicopter for search and rescue duty. The deal calls for the purchase of one 2010 MD Helicopters MD500E, single-engine helicopter for approximately $2 million. The Fire Department will also trade-in a 27-year old helicopter for $238,000. Oliveria said that getting a new aircraft during an economic downturn is still a wise decision, considering it would cost $800,000 to refurbish his operation’s old helicopter.
