Norman Surplus, a pilot from Northern Ireland, took off from Thailand on August 1, restarting his attempt to become the first person to fly a gyrocopter around the world. Through early August, he had flown more than 8,000 miles through Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Surplus is raising funds and awareness for cancer research through the effort. The phase starting August 1 is scheduled to last 50 days, including trips through Southeast Asia, Japan, eastern Russia and North America, covering a total of 19,000 miles before returning to northern Ireland.
