Tempe, Ariz.-based Van Horn Aviation and MD Helicopters have conducted the initial test flight with composite MD500 main rotor blades. The four-hour flight, which used an MD530F, took place April 7 at the manufacturer’s plant in Mesa, following a static pull test in late March that displayed the blades’ capability to withstand static loads of more than 47,000 lbs. Van Horn is now designing and building the production tooling required for FAA certification testing. Flight trials are scheduled to resume in third quarter 2011.
