Kazakhstan’s Federation for Civil Defense, Emergency Management and Natural Disasters Response (EMERCOM) hosted an international SAR training seminar in June, Kazspas 2011, featuring several Mil Mi-171s. The exercises, held in Astana, Kazakhstan, covered both on and offshore operations in harsh environments with a variety of resources. The helicopters performed firefighting maneuvers with a water bucket, lifted and transported an EMERCOM vehicle, and unloaded four-wheelers and other relief equipment during a simulated chemical plant emergency. Hover exercises featuring drops at an “earthquake” heap site rounded out the land-based activities. Water rescues using divers and a windlass were also practiced.
