Transport Canada has issued a type certificate for the R66 turbine to Robinson Helicopter of Torrance, Calif. The Canadian regulatory agency joined 19 other countries in approving the R66 after the U.S. FAA equivalent level of safety (ELOS) removed an exemption related to adding a secondary or backup hydraulic control system, in case of emergency situations.

Engineers from FAA and Transport Canada granted the ELOS approval following February 2013 flight tests that concluded the pilots would be able to “easily maintain control of the aircraft in the event of a hydraulic failure,” according to Robinson.

There are currently 13 R66 operators in Canada, and the manufacturer plans to deliver another 13 of the type to the country by the end of 2013. The model is certified in countries such as Australia, Brazil, Japan, Russia and South Africa.
