Terna, the Italian power grid operator, has taken delivery of two Airbus Helicopter AS350 B3e helicopters from national distributor Aersud Elicotteri. This elevates the company from having to subcontract the work out.

Terna is ranked sixth worldwide as an independent distributor of electricity and has over 63,000km of high voltage lines to manage nationwide through subsidiary Terna Rete Italia.

The helicopters will be used for power line surveillance as well as maintenance support and will be retrofitted for the mission by the distributor. It is estimated that around 300km of power lines can now be inspected daily by helicopter. The aircraft will also provide a quick response capability while giving the operator access to the more remote or inaccessible lines.

The AS350 B3e features Turbomeca’s Arriel 2D engine with FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control), avionics that feature Airbus Helicopters’ VEMD (Vehicle Engine Multifunction Display) and engine data recorder.
