Erickson Inc. is outfitting its heavy-lift S-64 Aircranes with certified Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) systems that allow them to transmit satellite-enabled positional data to ATC and receive it from other aircraft well ahead of the FAA’s 2020 deadline for installing such equipment. Erickson said it handled all system design, integration, testing and certification for the avionics, using Garmin to provide the hardware for the new systems. The company will perform modifications to its remaining Aircranes as their operations and scheduled maintenance permit. In addition to their heavy-lift missions worldwide, Aircrane crews are in heavy deployment throughout the western U.S. to combat wildland fires.
