A 31-year-old man is headed to prison for pointing a laser at a Tampa, Florida, police department's helicopter. Jeremy Wayne Sumpter of Garland, Texas, was sentenced to one year and one day in federal prison for "knowingly aiming a laser at an aircraft." He had pled guilty earlier this year to lasing the Tampa P.D. Bell Helicopter 407 on Feb. 14, 2014; prosecutors said the laser hit the helicopter four times. The 2012 FAA Modernization and Reform Act, signed into law Feb. 14, 2012, made it a federal crime to aim a laser at an aircraft or its flight path.
