Erickson Inc. will provide helicopter transport supporting the Alaska Dept. of Natural Resources Forest Inventory Analysis project. The 5-yr contract calls for Erickson to deliver an exclusive-use light-lift helicopter for charter services to a field crew led by the dept. establishing forestry field plots to analyze and monitor over several years. The company was awarded contracts to assist in wildfire suppression in Alaska earlier this year.

The Interior Forest Inventory and Analysis project's goal is to assess important forest functions within the Boreal forest of Interior Alaska, according to an Erickson press release. This is the last area of the U.S. to have an installed permanent sample grid, which will provide important information on the changes occurring in the region during climatic warming. The plots will enable the assessment of ecological change over time including changes in species distribution, growth rates, carbon flux, wildfire frequency and permafrost depth.
