The U.S. Air Force introduced the first of 21 HH-60G Pave Hawks as part of the Operational Loss Replacement (OLR) program. The HH-60G is used to conduct combat search and rescue.

Since October 2012, the Air Force has worked with the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command to contract modifications to 21 UH-60Ls it had purchased to convert into HH-60Gs.

The OLR program aims to restore the service's HH-60G fleet, some of which has been lost in deployed combat operations since 9/11. The OLR helicopters allow the service to perform SAR missions until it begins operating modernized combat rescue helicopters in 2020.
