The U.K. Ministry of Defence has received its 30th and final upgraded Leonardo AW101 Merlin Mk2 helicopter.

Leonardo and Lockheed Martin have been involved in the design, development and manufacture of the Merlin Mk2 under the Merlin Capability Sustainment Programme. The $990 million contract called for Mk1 helicopters to be updated to extend their service with the Royal Navy. The first upgraded helicopter was delivered in November 2012.

The Merlin Mk2s have new radars, sonar systems, infrared cameras and flat-panel displays. The Merlins have been used to rescue migrants in the Mediterranean Sea and to assist operations in Sierra Leone.
