The Italian Coast Guard has ordered two Leonardo AW139s, increasing the service's fleet to 12 AW139s. The helicopters will be used in missions such as maritime patrol, search and rescue, and emergency medical services.

Since the guard's 2010 contract to purchase four AW139s, a European Tender in August 2014 called for a second batch of helicopters. The aircraft from the first delivered have proved to be successful performing operations on the Italian coast line.

The guard's aircraft feature mission equipment including an external rescue hoist, cargo hook, wire strike protection, search/weather radar, marine band and satellite communication, high-definition forward looking infrared, mission console and more.

A total of 41 AW139s are also in service with the Italian State Police, its customs and border protection agency, and the Italian Air Force.
