The fuselage of Irish Coast Guard helicopter R116 has been located, the Irish Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) said. Initial remote operated vehicle operations located the wreckage of the CHC Helicopters Sikorsky S-92.

“The AAIU in consultation with An Garda Síochána, the Navy, the Coast Guard, the GSI and the Marine Institute wish to advise that following initial Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) operations the wreckage of R116 has been positively located on the sea bed on the Eastern side of Black Rock, at a depth of approx. 40m. Operations are continuing but are weather dependent,” AAIU said March 22.

News outlets reported that the rotorcraft might have struck the island before crashing into the sea on March 14. Whether or not the bodies of the three missing crewmembers are with the fuselage has not yet been determined. On March 16, a signal from the black box was located. On March 20, the AAIU released a statement saying that wreckage, primarily from the tail area of the helicopter, had been located.
