World Helicopter Day falls on Aug. 20 this year, and many in the industry are gearing up to celebrate.
"World Helicopter Day aims to raise awareness of the contributions that helicopters make to our society and celebrate the diverse range of people that design, fly and support them," says worldhelicopterday.com. "For rotary-wing aviators and support staff, World Helicopter Day is an opportunity for the helicopter fraternity to share in their common passion while preserving and promoting relationships, traditions and shared memories."
For most organizations hosting festivities, celebration comes in the form of rides on the spotlighted aircraft. Operators like Blue Hawaiian Helicopters and Australia’s Rotorvation Helicopters are offering discounted rides Aug. 20. SkyRides of Cape Town, South Africa, also has discounted slots available for flights.
Even non-operators are offering rides, like The Helicopter Museum in Somerset, England. The museum is also giving guests the chance to climb into the cockpit of some of its display aircraft. The American Helicopter Museum in Pennsylvania is also offering rides, among other activities.
Unmanned aircraft system activities will also be available on that day. Heliservices of Hong Kong plans to have drones on display.
Others are inviting the public to their hangars to partake and food and drink at headquarters. Canada-based BC Helicopters plans to have three aircraft on display, with pilots and engineers on hand to answer questions (not to mention the barbecue lunch). The U.K.’s Kuki Helicopters is planning to offer helicopter-themed snacks and drinks at its headquarters.
Australia’s Aeropower Flight School is inviting locals to its hangar. There, the local Air Force Cadets are scheduled to conduct a demonstration. The school also plans to offer presentations on how to fly helicopters, and what career paths are available in the industry.
For those who would rather stay on the ground, many entities hosting events on World Helicopter Day are offering rides in their simulators. Independent Helicopters of New York are offering free simulator rides, along with a limited number of flights.
