Helicopter Association International (HAI) describes the Vuichard Recovery as “a technique that trains helicopter pilots to recover from a condition known as 'vortex ring state' with a minimal loss of altitude.” For more than 30 years, pilots have used this technique to maintain safety. Because of that, Claude Vuichard — of Bern, Swizterland — has received HAI’s Salute to Excellence BLR Aerospace Safety Award.
The International Helicopter Safety Team and the U.S. Helicopter Safety Team have published Airmanship Bulletins promoting the technique, HAI said. And Robinson Helicopter Co. has integrated the technique into its safety course.
According to HAI, Vuichard retired from the Federal Office of Civil Aviation in Switzerland to conduct safety courses worldwide. He is currently continuing to teach globally and to develop new techniques to improve helicopter flight safety, HAI said. He has also set up a nonprofit organization, the Vuichard Recovery Aviation Safety Foundation, to spread his safety message.
This award will be formally presented during Heli-Expo 2018 in Las Vegas.
