Japan’s Asahi Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) has chosen a Leonardo AW169 for its operations. The manufacturer announced the transaction Tuesday with its official AW169 and AW139 distributor in Japan, Mitsui Bussan Aerospace.

According to Leonardo, this is the fourth AW169 to be sold to a Japanese customer. The new helicopter is set to enter service in 2021 to support electronic newsgathering operations.

The helicopter is to receive local installation of mission equipment and customization. That includes an ultra-HD gyro-stabilized camera, microwave downlink for live broadcasting and a comprehensive TV mission console

In recent years, the manufacturer has signed contracts for 10 aircraft in Japan, Leonardo said. This includes seven AW139s for NHK, Kansai TV, Nippon TV, Chukyo TV and two AW169s and one GrandNew for Asahi Shimbun and ABC.
