The FAA is expanding tests of a system designed to provide near real-time processing of airspace authorization requests for commercial drone operators. According to an FAA update on commercial drone operations and authorizations, the agency is expanding testing of the low-altitude authorization and notification capability (LAANC) system.
LAANC was first deployed in November 2017 at several air traffic facilities to evaluate how well the prototype system functions and to address any issues that arise during testing. The agency will conduct starting April 30 a nationwide beta test that will deploy LAANC incrementally at nearly 300 air traffic facilities covering 500 airports.
Final deployment is scheduled to begin Sept. 13.
