Leonardo has signed a grant agreement for OCEAN2020, the most important project related to the initiative to boost Europe's defense research under the European Defense Fund. The initiative is funded by the European Union and implemented by the European Defense Agency, the latter acting as contracting authority, under the Preparatory Action on Defense Research program.

The project, which will be funded by a grant totaling around 35 million Euros, will be led by Leonardo. Leonardo will coordinate a consortium composed of 42 partners from 15 European countries.

Ocean2020 will enable the enhancement and the integration of various types of unmanned platforms (fixed-wing, rotary-wing, surface and underwater vehicles) with the command and control center of the naval units, providing for the data exchange via satellite with command and control centers on the ground.

The joint and cooperative use of both pilot and unmanned platforms will also be demonstrated during the project.
