Leonardo is displaying at Helitech in Amsterdam this week an AW169 light intermediate helicopter in an offshore wind-farm support configuration operated in the North Sea.
At Helitech last year in London, the company displayed the AW169 in an emergency medical services configuration.
Leonardo is one manufacturer capitalizing on the spike in offshore wind farm developments, targeting its AW139 and AW169 toward the sector.
The company secured its first offshore wind contract for the AW169 with Uni-Fly A/S of Denmark at Helitech last year. The order called for two AW169s to enter service in the first quarter of 2018 and perform wind-farm support operations for DONG Energy at Hornsea Project One in the North Sea.
In recent years, large offshore wind farms have sprung up worldwide. Of particular note are ongoing developments in the North Sea, off the east and west coasts of the United Kingdom and off the coasts of Germany, France and Denmark. In 2017, Europe added 560 new offshore wind turbines.
