Australia's Victoria Police Air Wing has ordered three Leonardo AW139 intermediate twin-engine helicopters as part of its fleet modernization efforts.

The helicopters will carry out a range of law enforcement, patrol and surveillance, and maritime search and rescue missions from the Essendon airport on behalf of the Victoria Police.

The AW139s will be delivered from Leonardo’s Vergiate final assembly facility in Italy in late 2019 and will enter service in 2020.

Configured for policing operations, the new aircraft will feature tailored equipment including advanced mission console, camera, wire cutter and rescue hoist.

The AW139 is the best-selling EMS helicopter model in Australia, according to Leonardo, with more than 120 civil, public utility and military models sold countrywide to date.
