The FAA has granted type certification approval for Leonardo’s light twin-engine AW109 Trekker, opening it to the U.S. helicopter market where it is likely to find use in law enforcement, EMS, utility and homeland security capacities.

The AW109 Trekker maintains the AW109 Grand airframe and large cabin, adding landing skids and a glass Genesys Aerosystems cockpit. It’s powered by two Fadec-equipped Pratt & Whitney Canada PW207C turbine engines.

Orders for over 60 AW109 Trekkers have been logged so far by customers in Europe, North and Latin America, Asia to perform roles like emergency medical service, law enforcement, utility and passenger transport missions. Deliveries to customers started in 2018.
